Country houses hold more than anyone remembers

A hill-village house is rarely just the rooms you live in. There is the storeroom under the terrace, the space behind the kitchen that was going to be a utility room, the covered area beside the carport, and often an outbuilding that came with the plot. Between them they accumulate decades of perfectly rational decisions: the spare mattress for guests who stopped coming, a bed frame from the old house in England, garden tools that outlived their handles, tiles left over from a bathroom, and the wine-making equipment from the year someone got enthusiastic.

Clearing that is not heavy work in the sense of tonnage — it is heavy in the sense of handling. Every item has to come out of a low doorway, round a corner and down a step. We account for that from the photos and bring enough people that nothing gets dragged across a stone threshold.

External staircases and stone thresholds

The defining feature of Tala, Tremithousa and the older parts of Emba is the outside staircase: stone or tile, often without a handrail on one side, frequently turning at the bottom into a courtyard barely wide enough for a wardrobe. Getting a three-door wardrobe, a cast-iron bath or a full-size fridge down one of those safely takes technique, straps and two people who have done it before.

We would rather dismantle an item on the upper landing than force it round a turn and take a chunk out of a two-hundred-year-old stone corner. Old wardrobes usually come apart at the back panel in ten minutes; that is ten minutes well spent. Where the courtyard is too tight for the trolley we carry by hand to the van.

Wood stoves, firewood and winter clutter

Up at Tsada and Mesogi the winters are properly cold by Cyprus standards, and nearly every house has heated with wood at some point. What we get called for is the aftermath: a stove that rusted through, a stack of firewood that got wet three seasons ago and now feeds insects, flue sections in the storeroom, ash buckets, a chimney sweep's brush nobody has used since the stove was replaced.

It all loads fine — metal to scrap recycling, wet and rotten wood to disposal at recycling points and municipal facilities. The same visit usually picks up the other winter leftovers: dehumidifiers that stopped working, mouldy rugs from a room that was closed all season, and cardboard that has been "waiting to be taken to the recycling bin" since Christmas.

Narrow lanes and how we plan the day

The old cores of these villages were laid out long before vans existed. Some lanes are single-track with a stone wall on both sides and a turning point only at the square. We know most of them. Where the van can reach your door we reverse in; where it cannot, we park at the nearest usable point and trolley the distance. Either way the number we sent you from your photos is the number you pay.

Because the hill villages take longer per load than Paphos town, we tend to schedule them as morning jobs with the whole slot reserved rather than squeezing them between town collections. Message us the day before if you can and we will give you a window rather than a vague "sometime tomorrow". If you are also emptying a whole property, the same crew handles a full or part clearance including the storerooms and the garden.
